Under the guidance of Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih V (may Allah be his Helper), question-and-answer sessions are being held across Canada with Respected Amir Sahib. QUESTION: “Does age gap matter in marriage? e.g. 3 years, 5 years, 10 years.”
ANSWER:
Islam does not prescribe a specific age gap as a condition for marriage. The Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) do not mention age difference—whether three years, five years, or ten years—as a determining factor for marital success. Instead, Islam places primary emphasis on compatibility in faith, character, and mutual understanding, which form the foundation of a stable and blessed marriage.
The foremost criterion Islam sets for choosing a spouse is religion. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) clearly stated:
تُنْكَحُ الْمَرْأَةُ لِأَرْبَعٍ: لِمَالِهَا وَلِحَسَبِهَا وَلِجَمَالِهَا وَلِدِينِهَا فَاظْفَرْ بِذَاتِ الدِّينِ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكَ
“A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion. So choose the one who possesses religion, may your hands be rubbed with dust.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5090; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1466]
This Hadith makes it clear that while people may consider various worldly factors, religion is the decisive criterion endorsed by Islam. Notably, age is not mentioned among these factors, underscoring that spiritual and moral compatibility outweigh numerical differences in years.
The blessed example of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) further illustrates this principle. He married Hazrat Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) when he was twenty-five years old and she was forty. Despite a significant age difference, their marriage was one of profound love, mutual respect, and spiritual harmony. This union demonstrates that age disparity does not hinder marital success when compatibility in values, faith, and character exists.
Islam encourages harmony and understanding between spouses rather than rigid social formulas. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) emphasized the importance of character and faith in marital relations, stating:
إِذَا أَتَاكُمْ مَنْ تَرْضَوْنَ دِينَهُ وَخُلُقَهُ فَزَوِّجُوهُ
“When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you (with a proposal), then marry him.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1084]
Once again, the emphasis is on religion and character, not age. These qualities ensure mutual respect, shared moral direction, and the ability to navigate life’s challenges together.
In conclusion, Islam does not consider age gap—whether small or large—to be a decisive factor in marriage. What truly matters is compatibility rooted in faith, righteousness, and good character. When spouses are God-fearing, morally aligned, and committed to their religious responsibilities, age becomes secondary. As Islamic teachings and the example of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) clearly show, religious compatibility is the key to a successful and blessed marriage, not numerical age differences.
